Goodwin Procter LLP represented several defendants in a large scale international dispute between several high profile multinational pharmaceutical companies.

The challenges of this case included a heavy production of documents in the discovery process, which was difficult to manage due to the sheer volume of documents, and had the additional complexity of being primarily in Norwegian and Swedish. Goodwin Procter approached Park as its go-to vendor for language solutions in international litigations.

Park implemented a strategic process for review of the Norwegian and Swedish material. Park sent a team of linguists who specialize in document review to sift through thousands of foreign language documents in order to flag and prioritize the relevant material. After successfully reducing the number of relevant documents by over 90%, Park systematically completed formal translations in accordance with the six week deposition schedule.

Two of the largest manufacturers of printer cartridge technology were recently involved in a dispute over the intellectual property rights to a specific LCD technology. The case was filed in Texas district court with follow-up suits and counterclaims subsequently filed all over the world.

Vinson & Elkins is an international full service law firm ranked as one of the best in the world, and served as lead counsel in this complex case. During the course of the litigation Vinson & Elkins faced a series of challenges stemming from the various linguistic and technical aspects of the case.

Vinson & Elkins faced a difficult discovery process. They received thousands of Japanese documents of a highly technical nature. Counsel also had to conduct depositions in a variety of locations across the globe in both Japanese and English. Vinson & Elkins approached Park to provide language solutions for the entire case. Park coordinated all the depositions, deploying Japanese interpreters to provide real-time translation of highly technical information.  Park concurrently provided translations of applicable discovery materials in accordance with the Vinson & Elkins’s deposition time line, ensuring that they were prepared in advance for each deposition.

Park’s interpreters were key to overcoming the language barrier and properly explaining the technological nuances that are often lost in translation. Additionally, one of Park’s expert interpreters dually served as a technical consultant throughout the project and proved to be an invaluable resource to Vinson & Elkins.

The project was a fast-paced assignment requiring streamlined management of multiple foreign–language witnesses and a large volume of Japanese documentation, coordinated across multiple sites worldwide.  Vinson & Elkins was able to rely on Park’s experience and knowledge of the litigation process to provide the end to end language support it needed in order to be able to focus on the fundamentals of the case.
